Thomas Edison

It is difficult to believe that less than a 150 years ago, we could not switch on lights in our homes when it went dark. People who wanted to work or study at night had to use gas or oil lights. Electric light bulbs were invented in 1879 by Thomas Edison, who also helped produce the system of getting electricity from where it was generated to where it was used. Edison was a very intelligent man, but when he was at school his teachers did not realise this. He had to leave school at the age of seven because he asked too many questions. His mother realized that he only asked questions because he was interested, so she educated him at home. The General Electric Company, which Edison started, still supplies most of the electricity in North America today.

More about trees

Trees have often been important in history. On a famous Greek island, there is a tree that is more than 12 metres in width. It is growing in exactly the same place as Hippocrates, the father of medicine, used to teach his pupils. And in another place and time, the English hero Robin Hood is believed to have hidden from his enemies in the branches of large trees. The English language uses many words connected with trees. You can talk about the branches of a bank or a shop and the trunk of the human body. And if someone has lived somewhere for a long time, you can say they have put down roots.

A village in the mountains

When the people of a small island off the coast of Scotland woke up and looked out of their bedroom windows one morning, they were amazed. At the north end of their island, they saw mountains covered with snow and a village. The village consisted of a large building with smaller houses around it. The reason that the people were amazed was because none of these things had been there when they went to bed the night before. This strange sight remained all day, but then disappeared when the sun went down. Scientists believe that they had seen the mountains and village from another country, 800 kilometres to the north. Experts agreed that unusual weather and light hadprobably caused this strange sight.

The Girl Against the Jungle is the story of a girl who is flying to Brazil with her mother. Suddenly, there is a storm m and the plane crashes. The girl wakes up to find herself in the middle of a thick jungle. She is not badly injured, but there are parts of the plane around her and she discovers that she is the only survivor. She realises that it will be difficult for anyone to find her in the jungle, and she knows that if she stays where she is, she will die. Then she remembers some advice her father had given her many years before. He had said, “If you are lost in a jungle, you should find a river and follow it.” The next day, she sets off to find a river. After walking for seven days, she comes to a small town, where people look after her.

The Taj Mahal, which is outside the city of Agra in India, was built by the Emperor Shah Jahan. It is a tomb for his favourite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Her body is buried under the building. The Taj Mahal was started in 1633 and took 22 years to build. Today, it is one of the most popular buildings in the world for tourists.

The Taj Mahal is built of white stone which is covered with beautiful designs. The highest part of the roof of the Taj Mahal is shaped like an onion. In front of the building is a lake. At night, in the light of the moon, you can see the Taj Mahal in this lake – it is a beautiful sight.

- A film you have enjoyed recently.
In fact I like comic films best. Watching comic films makes my day تسعدني because they make me laugh. I think a successful film should not only have a good moral مغزى but also it benefit تفيد the society. Really, I have watched a film of Ramadan Mabrouk Abu El-Allamen Hamoda recently. I really enjoyed watching this film because it deals with يتناول some important social issues قضايا in a comic way. The moral of this film is that it shows some problems in our society resulted from ناتجة عن contactsالوسايط and social differences. This film tries to solve these problems. It also shows the important role of the teacher in the process عملية of the change if there is determination تصميم, bravery شجاعة and patience صبر. - Unusual weather that you remember.

Last summer, my family and I went to the beach for three days. Most of the first day was on the road because the car broke down تعطلت so many times. Therefore, we arrived late. I spent all the night dreaming about swimming and sunbathing أخذ حمام شمسي. When I woke up استيقظت in the morning I was surprised. The weather was stormy عاصفاً and rainy ممطراً, so we stayed indoors داخل المنزل all the day. In the evening my little sister got ill, so we took her to the hospital where we spent most of the third day. Finally, we packed حزمنا our luggage أمتعتنا and came back home. It was a very unlucky trip.
